I am so uninformed...

Winter coats. I just don't understand them.
I know they're essential, especially when I'm living in New York City. I know that. People tell me that all the time. My mother reminds me about it every time she calls.
I just don't understand though!
In Oregon, I wore a jacket during the fall and winter months. That was perfectly fine. I was happy with that. I thought that was wearing a lot but apparently, that's practically naked here.
Here, it's weird.
You have to actually go out and buy a big, heavy winter coat. What? What the hell is a winter coat? A coat for winter, I assume but aside from that I'm absolutely clueless. I don't know what to do. I don't even know if I'd recognize one if I see it. How am I supposed to buy one myself? God, it's times like this I wish my mom had just bought one for me.
But damn!
Since I am so clueless when it comes to this "winter coat" thing, I decided to do some research. God damn Bloomingdale's and Macy's websites to be down at the same time just when I was about to look for one. I searched some other sites and so far, I've come to these conclusions:
A winter coat is an expensive piece of clothing that is supposedly a "more expensive" item that people spend their money on. That is very disappointing as I really don't want to spend money like that. Apparently, I should think about the price range $199-250. That's a lot of money! I know I shouldn't skimp on something like this but...but...but...
Wool is good. Cashmere also good. Oh, and I also need scarfs and gloves and boots... God, how much is this going to cost?! O.o I really don't want to be spending this money...
And it's not even as if I have that much time! I have midterms for the next two weeks so I'm thinking that one weekend after midterms before Thankgiving I'll go and buy it. I'm going to hit Manhattan Mall, Macy's, Century 21 and Bloomingdales hopefully all in one weekend... I think I might have to spend the entire weekend working away at it... Damn. From the end of the Chem exam at about 3:30 on Friday I can go to one place and spend the afternoon there. Then Saturday is spent first in lab and then the rest of the day in shops. Sunday, all day shopping exploration and hopefully purchases will all have been made by now. Hopefully. Hey, I can always return unused items right?
Okay, that sounds like a plan. No we'll have to see if I'll follow through with it.
