Man, Spinoza is my god!
Oct. 31st, 2005 08:13 pmI like knowing I'm reading something condemned as evil. *laughs*
His attack on the clergy, God and the Bible is just so funny! It's like, "WTF, people can say things like that?!"
I loved the line "it follows that Scriptural doctrine contains not abstruse speculatation or philosophical reasoning, but very simple matters able to be understood by the most sluggish mind."
While I don't totally have an opinion on what he's saying, I find it absolutely hilarious the things he points out. Like loving your neighbour is the extent of obedience to God or that the prophets were all just really creative people. I do like his rejection of obedience to divine law and piety should be out of moral law instead but he is a bit harsh. I can see why people condemned it...
I mean, it's clear the guy was brilliant and the fact that he had the guts to put something like this out back in the 17th Century when religion was a much larger part of life and when freedom of speech was respected much less is something noteworthy. I don't believe in God and I do kinda agree with him but at the same time, I can see why he pissed off everyone with his Tractatus Theologico-Politicus. If I were a philosphy major, I would so love to study him and his Ethics, especially since Ethics is supposed to be his absolute masterpiece.
Ah, well, I don't have time to be spending on this, even though I really do want to read more of it. I'll do it when I try to fall asleep tonight. I only got 4.5 hours last night with all my bio studying... Tonight, lab report that is touted to be about 2.5-3 hours long. I will do that, try to study chapter 9 for Orgo and then do Spinoza. Yosh, that sounds like a plan!
edit x1: A reason to actually use AOL - The AOL Radio! I have been so out of touch with American/English songs since I've gone to college... I wouldn't be able to name one top 20 song at all... This help though.
