Huh, it's an accident...
Sep. 2nd, 2008 02:26 pmSo, about twenty or so minutes ago, I heard a loud noise. My window was open and it was a random sudden dull boom. And I paid it no mind. I lack curiosity and I was reading a nice Snape/Black story that frankly occupied my thoughts. That, and I just assume it was construction two streets down since I live in a relatively new suburban complex with new houses being put up all the time. God only knows their trucks annoy me to no end when they start transporting supplies in and dirt out.
Anyway, I only got up after I found out that my wireless went down and with it, my internet. I was still connected to the router and with a check, I found I could connect to a neighbor's unsecured wireless network but after only a bit of internet access, that too went down. And as with my own router, I still connected, just not to the internet. It was all very strange so I decided to get up and physically go over to the router and modem and reset both in hopes of regaining the internet, especially since I wasn't finished with my story and desperately needed the next chapter.
It was then that my mother, who had suddenly appeared at the house (generally, she's at work and doesn't hang around the house at all during the day) and she clued me into the accident across the street. It was rather serious -- a car accidentally veered off the road and hit an electricity or some sort of utility box. There were two police cars, a fire truck and an ambulance. And the driver of the car was laying on one of those boards used to secure a person's body when they've had back injuries surrounded by a host of EMTs. The accident site was also cornered off with yellow tape and spectators stood all around watching the scene.
My mother apparently arrived before the authorities did and she had seen our neighbors standing around (an old married couple who frequents our restaurant a lot and always seem to give me peppermint candies each time we meet) as well as a man crying. Apparently, the guy was trying to turn his car when his dog jumped into his lap causing him to lose control of his car and so he swerved onto the sidewalk and into the green electricity box. I only assume it's an electricity box because the power company has dispatched a truck to deal with it.
The damage is rather impressive though. The box flew several feet away and it actually uprooted several bricks. And there's a mess of wires where the box used to sit. Our neighbor's car looks relatively unscathed but my mother thought she saw some damage so hopefully it's not too much.
I hope the guy's okay... Back injuries are iffy and he seemed to be in a lot of pain.
And I hope the internet comes back on. I can only assume the accident had something to do with the internet going down since it seems everyone with Charter is down currently. Right now I'm stealing wireless from someone who has internet still but I hate doing that knowing I have a wireless router ourselves and one that generally works well most of the time. :\
Hopefully the power people and fix things so we're back in business with only a bit of delay...
Damn, the power truck just left. And a quick check at the modem tells me we still don't have internet. :( Fuck. The police and firetruck is still there and a tow truck has joined them so I assume the power people just came to make sure there wasn't any danger with the exposed wires... :\ Does that mean they won't be fixing things yet? Not until the scene is clear? :( Not cool. I don't want to steal internet indefinitely! :\
