Kent's getting an Xbox 360! For Black Friday I mean. What a coincidence -- here I was thinking about getting one as well. Not in any firm definite terms but definitely wanting one... He's getting one to play Banjo Kazooie despite the fact that the reviews of it are mixed. But he's been into that game since forever so it makes sense in a way. And now that the Xbox has been out on the market for so long, the price has dropped to a bit more reasonable. Not to mention it will be on Black Friday too.
Me, I've been wanting one to play Viva Pinata. There are two games out but I'm leaning towards the newer game (because it's newer!), Trouble in Paradise. It looks like a lot of fun and more complicated than Pocket Paradise for the DS. It's priced at around $40 but I'd still like to play it. Maybe I'll eBay it?
Right now I'm trying to decide on desserts for Thanksgiving. We're planning on doing it at my uncle's place in Portland and I want to bring a dessert. Or really, several desserts. I want to do a pie. And I want to try a cheesecake again. As for the pies, we're currently in possession of several cases (yup, CASES, the downside of living in Hood River) of apples that no one is eating and this would be a good way to get rid of a couple of them.
But I'm not a big fan of apple pie. It's not bad, but it's not awesome either.
What I am a fan of is pumpkin pie -- a pie that will most definitely take more money to make as I don't exactly have the ingredients on hand like I do with the apple pie. What can I say? There's just something to pumpkin pie that makes it oh so yummy.
I'm not sure I want to buy two pie pans but my pie crust recipe does yield 2 pie crusts so I could do both of them... :\
What I plan on doing is making them Wednesday night and baking them the day of. The cheesecake will be a pretty involved recipe (this time I'm going to make sure I don't fail!) and it does need time to chill so that will hopefully be completed the day before entirely. Can I do it? Three desserts in one day? Hmm...
And there's one thing to think of as well -- there's only going to be 10 adults. Three desserts will probably be a bit overkill.
What I'm thinking is this -- make all the desserts, eventually. I'll have the extra pie crust so I'll have to use it eventually. I'm leaning towards pumpkin pie and cheesecake for Thanksgiving and apple pie for later just for us. It's not going to be very loved I suspect but I'll definitely take a slice and my parents will probably as well. My grandmother seems to have this thing against cooked apples but they're soft so maybe she'll be into it as well. And maybe Kent/Diana would take some back to school with them?
I don't know how the relatives will feel about the desserts but I'm confident that if the cheesecake works, they'll probably eat it as well. I'm thinking about pairing it with either a strawberry or raspberry sauce although it's not really the season for either so I'll probably have to go with frozen. That makes me lean towards raspberries since I think they freeze a lot better than strawberries. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though.
The reason why I want a sauce is because I'm afraid of cracking, the bane of all cheesecakes. So if it cracks, a sauce will at least hide it.
But if the whole cake fails like it did last time (oh so miserably), I might have to make both pies and bring them. But two pie pans -- ugh, so don't wanna. We're never going to make more than one pie at a time so it's just a waste of money. *makes a face*
I'm not sure when either Kent or Diana is coming back so who knows if they'll help. I don't care either way. Kent said he's going to try and surprise us with when he'll come back but I know he has no class on Wednesday so he could potentially be back late Tuesday (but I suspect some time on Wednesday). Diana apparently has class on Wednesday until late so she'll probably be back either late on Wednesday or not come back at all and meet up with us in Portland. But I don't know one way or another so who knows?
Gah, I'm going to go into planning mode -- gathering recipes, making lists for ingredients I need to buy, scheduling and stuff. Hopefully baker!Sherry won't fail because I want my desserts!
