Jan. 8th, 2010 06:41 amI don't know why, but I had an inexplicable urge to go and wiki plums.
And that has lead me to the damson plum. Out of all the plums, this one looks most like the plums my family used to get off of our own plum tree in the backyard. It was a huge tree, doubling or tripling my height with egg sized and oval shaped purple fruit... We used to get tons of them, more than we would know what to do with so the ones that weren't given away generally went bad... Or the animals got to them...
I remember picking them off the tree, rubbing away the dirt that was one them and revealing the shiny skin... And because I disliked the taste of the skin, I would peel it, revealing the yellow, sweet flesh inside and the huge pit after I bit into it...
In a way, these plums will always remind me of my childhood and of summer days... Lots of good memories and it makes me wish I had one of those plums with me right now... It's been years since I had a plum from that tree, 13 since we moved away from that house with those plums... We rent it out so it's still in our possession but I wonder if our renters are treating it kindly, if they've been enjoying the plums as much as we did, if it still produces more plums than a family and all its relatives could ever eat...
