Scones!

IMG_4125 I made me some scones today! As I said I would!

I think they turned out well enough for my first time. Look at those pretties -- they're speckled because I had brushed the tops with a mix of cream, sugar and cinnamon. And I got to use my new pastry brush! It's amazing how those little things can make you insanely happy. They're rather plain scones actually since the recipe I used called for currants or dried cranberries. I personally DESPISE cranberries in all their forms and I didn't have currants (only raisins but somehow I thought they would be too large in my scones) so I omitted them.

What I am glad I didn't omit was the lemon zest. It was my first time zesting a lemon, and with a peeler no less, because I left the grater at the restaurant. :( I knew I should have bought that hand microplaner... It was so shiny too... And you know how much I love kitchen gadgets. And it's not like it's a one use only (remember what Alton Brown says!), I could use it on hard cheese too. And nutmeg, should I ever buy whole ones...

More pictures and scone talk this way )

Outside of the crumbly scones, I count this a success. It was tasty and yummy, which really was the important part of it all. Also, the scones didn't rise as high as I thought they might... :( I think I might have either rolled it out too thin, didn't add enough baking powder or they're just really supposed to be about that high. Although, some of the thicker ones started drooping in the oven as they rose so they ended up not being as high as I think they could have gotten...

Okay, onwards! First, I'm going to have to polish off these scones before I make more. Somehow, I don't see that as a problem. And after that, it's cheese scones. Seeing as I adore cheese, I'm looking forward to it. The only thing left is to decide on whether or not to add some green onions to the scones (which I think would be good) or some chives (which I think would be better). The only thing is I don't have chives but I do have green onions so do I make a trip to the store specifically to buy chives?

Or do I wait until Friday, the day I know the Girl Scouts will be there, buy chives and more cookies? Oh, it's dilemma alright...
