Read The Lucifer Principle. It explains a lot about the nature of humanity, and plus, it kinda makes you feel better about yourself. Really though, it just reaffirmed what I've always known.
Man can be evil, but never forget that Nature is just as cruel, and any animal in our place would do just as badly, if not worse. We only feel evil because in our capacity to do evil, we can do just as much good, and this realization makes what we don't do look ten times worse.
When I read about somebody like Hitler or Stalin, and somebody makes a comment, "He's a monster!" I just want to say "No, he's not a monster. He's being competely, perfectly human."
We're what Nature made us. It's up to us to become better.
