Accompaniment! That was the word I had been looking for! For some reason, I just couldn't come up with it last night as I was writing... I ended up with "companion" which as soon as I wrote it, felt completely inadequate. Accompaniment would have been absolutely perfect. Now I wish I had thought of it. It was just on the tip of my tongue but I just couldn't figure it for some reason... :\
