w00t!

I had been pretty dissatisfied with my download speeds of late so after messing around with the router's wireless settings tonight, I managed to increase my speeds by like a ton! I had been getting around 1100 Kb/s when it was good but most of the time it was around 300-400 Kb/s and at worst around 100 Kb/s. It made me upset, really, really upset because I know we have a 5 Mbps internet connection but we only get those kinds of speeds while wired. And what is the point of having a wireless router if we need to be wired? I mean, I knew being on wireless meant slower speeds but I never thought it would that slow, you know?

So I looked up some stuff online (thank you Google!), changed the channel (since there were like two other devices on that channel) to avoid interference, changed the transmission rate and now I'm up to around 2000 Kb/s! What a major change! Yay to being able to stream videos without it stuttering on me! ^^ Seriously, I don't know why I didn't do this before. Right now I'm having a field day just testing my speeds because it's been so long since I saw speeds like that on wireless. I have this, OMG, it's so beautiful feeling right now. :)

...WHAT HOW DID YOU....!???

I'm assuming you're asking what I did?

Well, like I said, the main thing I did was just change the channel that my wireless router was broadcasting on. I used Vistumbler (since I'm running Vista, use can use Netstumbler if you're on XP) to see what the other wireless devices around me were broadcasting on and I changed ours to a channel not being used. Then I set the basic and trasmission rates to "Auto" and that basically solved all the slow connection problems we've been having.

NO WAY!!! How could we have missed this?! I'm so jealous now! The Wii/Xbox must be so much faster now!

Must. get. back. home. to. witness. ;)

I know! And actually, most of the time when I checked the speed, it was around 3000-4000 Kb/s (highest around 4400 Kb/s). I just said 2000 Kb/s because that was the lowest I got and I didn't want to over-inflate it too much. I am adoring the fast wireless speeds!
