Perseid Meteor Shower
Aug. 12th, 2004 01:36 amContrary to popular belief, a meteor shower is not a shower at all. I just got back from almost an hour and an half of being outside watching the shower and it was so scant... On AOL, it said it would reach its peak at midnight and we should be able to see one meteor a minute.
We didn't see a meteor a minute. We did get to see a couple every so often, providing we were looking at the right place in the sky. We (being me, my sister and brother) started watching around midnight behind the restaurant and we saw two. Then we decided to go down behind Subway because it was darker over there and we saw a couple of great ones. It was a bit annoying craning our necks but it was worth it when we would see one of them.
Most were kinda tiny and didn't stay in the sky for very long but once in a while we would see a nice fat one where the tail kinda glows in the sky for a brief second after it had past. It was kinda funny because when one of us saw one, we would go "oooh!" and point and everyone else would turn their head to that part of the sky but it would be too late or you could see a little bit of the end. But when two people saw it, it would be a double "oooh!" and the other person would be so disappointed that they didn't see it at all. It was sorta sad being the person left out, especially when it was a big meteor.
After a while, we got tired of all the trees and other obstructions to our view down by Subway so we decided to make the trek up the hill. It wasn't as dark but we could see much more of the sky which was definitely good. We stayed there for another hour and we saw a bunch of them but it wasn't as if it was that great. Somehow, I had hoped that we would get a sky full of meteors and it would be a rightful light show but we were out of luck. Oh well...
While we were in between meteors, we ended up talking about the past, reminiscing about the past parties (Thanksgiving and birthdays) we had been too and everything that we remember about it. It seemed right that we would have a great sibling moment before I leave for college.
Eventually, we decided we needed to go back... We decided to leave right after we all see one more meteor and to guarantee that we all see the same one, we decided to look at the same part of the sky. Unfortunately, the one we saw, Kent missed but it was a really beautiful and big one... Since Kent was the one who wanted to leave anyway, we decided to leave...
Now I'm back in the hot apartment, out of the cold outside... It's like 70 F degrees out there and we're around 90 F (when last check on the thermometer). It kinda sucks. And now that I'm back up here, I've discovered that apparently I was a buffet for the mosquitoes outside. Itchy!
Oh well... We're going out to Portland tomorrow (getting a very cool laptop hopefully!) so I'll have to go to sleep kinda early. But probably not. LOL, I'm just not the type to go to sleep early.
Right now I'm just going to take a nice long shower and then I'll feel a lot more comfortable. Ja ne!
