How very ironic...
Apr. 5th, 2008 12:48 amI was going to post about how bored I was tonight with nothing to do, not many new fanfics to read or the ones I've been following having been updated, nothing to watch and I was about to talk about how I almost feel like resorting to homework because I was that bored. And that's when it hit me.
I had responses due! They're for my Ecology class and usually I like to get them before the actual class but since this week we were having an independent trip, the sense of urgency is lost. I had started them yesterday at work and I was going to continue on doing them today but since I didn't have work, it just slip my mind. And now I'm stuck doing the rest of them.
Ugh, how not fun. Still, it's good that I remembered to do them instead of forgetting completely like that other time until it was like Sunday and I submitted them late... She wanted them before each class and technically, our classes start at 10 AM so I have lots of time to finish them. I just hate having to condense what I've read into one measly paragraph. Especially if I'm reading research papers. And this week seems to be research paper galore. :\ So for I've done about a quarter of the readings and I'm trying to work through them as fast as I can. The problem is that this week seems to have a ton of readings too.... Last week was only three but this week is 10. I mean oh my god. One of them is actually a chapter from a book!
I should have realized this sooner. I wasted all that time... :(
Anyway, this post was supposed to be a music post so I guess I'm going to do that as well during my little break from reading and responding.
I seem to be on a Linkin Park kick which is surprising to me. I was never a fan and I've always considered their music emo so I've never really explored them all too deeply. But I was aware of them. I think I saw either the music video to In the End or maybe it was a performance of it at some award show or something like that and I distinctly remembering thinking that their lead singer had an awesome voice, even if he was prone to screaming with it. And then Diana found My December, a wonderfully depressing and dark song, something I have an inordinate amount of fondness for. So my repertoire really consisted of those two songs. Until a few days ago, I found Numb. It was playing on my iPod so I presume I had downloaded it but I don't remember it at all! The some wasn't familiar to me but I knew from the very first listen that I liked it. I liked it a lot. And in a totally stereotypical way, it spoke to me. Even though I wasn't feeling those feelings at the moment, I do know them very well. So I connected with it. And you also have Chester Bennington's really beautiful voice (I totally thought he could sing boyband music the first time I heard him) and it just makes it such a good song.
So yeah, I had to go and download all of Linkin Park's songs after that. While I haven't listened through them all very thoroughly, basically only Meteora, but I also found Somewhere I Belong. Well, actually, I was on Youtube watching their music videos which is where I first encountered the song. This basically cemented Mike Shinoda in my heart. I don't go for rapping but it's not like the mainstream type of rapping that I hear that is full of obscenities and things that can't be mentioned in polite company... Nor did it debase people or make me uncomfortable with their scary and creepy lyrics... And you have Chester Bennington's beautiful voice weaving through it...Until you get to the point where he starts screaming again and it's laced with such pain and yearning and once again, stereotypical speaking to me sort of thing. You just empathize with the guy and the song. What can I say? I just liked it.
Linkin Park lead me to Fort Minor, Mike Shinoda's independent album and it's there that I found Remember the Name. It's featuring Styles of Beyond, people or a group that I don't know. Anyway, what was so shocking was that I had always wondered what that song was! It's the one that was used for the NBA game commercials on TNT! It's always caught my attention since I always kinda liked it even though like I said rapping isn't my style... This song didn't speak to me but then again, I think it's about an up and coming hiphop artist? At least that's what the lyrics suggest. I can see why it was used for sports games though -- it totally has the right kind of challenge the champions, we can do it, sort of feel to it.
Next song is Natasha Bedingfield's Pocketful of Sunshine. This song is the one that's used in the commercials for the new spring 2008 season of ABC and that's where it first caught my attention. What can I say? I have a fondness for songs used in commercials. Anyway, I was a bit shocked at the name when I googled the commercial... I wasn't sure that it was the right song but after I listened to it, there was no doubt. While a lot of lyrics do seem contrite and kinda make me go -_- I do like the chorus a lot so that's why it's on the list.
And lastly, there's NEWS' Bambina. I don't really keep up on the latest releases by the various Johnny's groups any more but I made a little trip to Jpopsuki the other day and discovered this. I didn't much like the single that this song was on, but Bambina wasn't that bad. The opening totally got to me. I like a song that has a bit of an attitude. And since it was basically laced through the entire song, I like it. The singing isn't the best in this -- they really probably should have stuck to their little solos because it was a bit strained when they sung together as a group but I can't write off the entire song. If I was a better Japanese student, I would sit down and try to decipher the lyrics but I'm not so I'm just enjoying the way the song sounds.
Okay, enough of that. I am determined to finish these readings and responses by 2:30 AM. Yosh! Here's to hoping I won't procrastinate any more tonight.
