Skipping work
Apr. 8th, 2008 01:16 pmSo my alarm woke me up today and realized I really didn't want to get up and go to work. I laid there on my bed thinking about how I knew today was going to be a fairly nice day and how it was going to be mid-fifties weather and how I really didn't to go to work yesterday either but ended up going because of afterschool... And I decided to just turn off my alarm and go back to bed.
So today is an impromptu skiving off work day. What shall I do? I kinda want to go to Nintendo World already and get me a case to go with my DS Lite since I didn't end up doing it over the weekend. But it's the weekday and I really hate doing weekend-y kinda of stuff during the weekday. It's weird, I know but that's how I end up feeling because weekends are the days of mutual fun for most people as they have work during the weekend (as I should be doing). Still, free time and all, nice day and all...We'll see. It's early yet after all.
For lunch today, I finally used up the artichoke hearts that have been sitting in the freezer for the last several months. They were Janet's but she either forgot to use them up or to throw them out when she left. And I hate wasting food, even if it's not mine. The only problem is that I really don't use artichoke hearts at all in my cooking. Aside from maybe making a spinach artichoke dip out of it, I had no idea what to do.
So today I decided to just play around with my food since I had time to make something else if I mess up and I wasn't starving because I hadn't eaten in a day. What I ended up making was this -- a pseudo artichoke risotto. I say pseudo because I really didn't have the right rice for it.
I basically had long grain white rice, something I knew was not suitable for cooking risotto at all, and my medium grain Kohoku Rose rice so that's what I used. It looks a bit like a mushy blob but it really wasn't. I may have over cooked the rice a bit (although it was al dente when I tasted it) but I really think it was from the fact that I used a bit too much half&half at the end. I wanted it to be creamy so I added maybe a quarter of a cup of half and half at the very end of the cooking. It actually looked pretty good at the end but the half and half made it seem like the rice swelled so much more and it became so much more blob-y. Next time, should I ever make this again, I'll maybe add only a splash of half&half or omit it altogether. I also tossed in the rest of my parmesan/romano cheese mix that I had since I basically used it all up at this point.
It tasted pretty good actually. The half&half added too much of a creamy, milky dairy flavor to it that I wasn't as fond of but despite that, it was pretty flavorful. I made it with chicken stock and the cheese was a nice touch to it I think. The artichoke hearts kinda got lost but they were yummy when I ate into them.
Considering I never made this before and the fact that cooking rice in a pot actually scares the hell out of me (plus, no burning of rice!), I think I can call this a success. I'll have to try it again sometime and see if I can't perfect it even more. And now that I've eaten, I really kinda just wanna go back into bed and nap the day away. I'm so lazy sometimes...
