Oct. 6th, 2011 09:55 pmSo, I've been avoiding Tumblr since the summer ended. Well, since around the time of Darren's Market Days where I just gave up trying to find all the good Darren pictures since it was just not fun anymore. I went back a few days ago because of spoilery pictures of the Warblers and of Sebastian (who isn't Sebastian, I don't know, I'm not following it all that closely) but it's been a while...
And today, god, reading a fanfic and you go down and see a comment that you couldn't unsee and all of a sudden the entire story and the author has been poisoned in my mind. And Tumblr was part of the problem. *sigh* Oh Tumblr, sometimes I think it is like
ontd_glee, it just causes people to show off their awful, petty sides. It brings out the worst in people... But then I think back on my years in fandom and all the wanks I've seen and was a bystander to and I think that it's not fair to blame it on a specific community or a specific website, it's fandom and the internet and how it facilitates people in fandom to be terrible human beings. Before, things like this would be flying around on message boards and in mailing lists, now it's on LJ and Tumblr. That's just how it is because ultimately, I think people are incapable of being decent. Even though we work at it, we still manage to be horrible to other people. And that's really disheartening.
I want to go back to where I found stuff like this hilarious and not just sad. Back when I could have just laughed at all the stupid parties and thought to myself, "What crazy idiots they are (thank god I'm not like them)," and went on my merry way. Now, it just gets me down because despite all of our progress, despite thinking we've progressed, we're still relearning lessons we should have learned already and no matter how much good we do, it's all the bad that we'll get measured by.
At any rate, I'll never see that author in the right light ever again. On a related topic, this is why I personally hate A/N -- if you're a douche, I really don't want to see it and have it affect my opinion of your story. Because really, can you objectively enjoy a story while having a bad opinion of the author? It's one thing I haven't been able to manage yet.
