We lack God! Or really just any type of religion I guess. Growing up here, you don't really realize it until you leave, especially for some place outside of the Northwest to a place like NYC where it feels like religion is in your face. I mean getting time off because your professor is Jewish and it's a Jewish holiday? Hitting a church every couple of blocks? It's a bit mind-boggling. It's like you know some people are religious and you know it's a big deal to some people in your head but you get no evidence of its significance in your daily life. And you more or less push it off to the side and file it away in your mind to place where you consider people to be religiously crazy like the South.
But I'm a bit glad about it as well. While most of us does seem to be atheists (myself included), we do seem to have a multitude of different religions, not just the mainstream ones and because of that, we are a bit more open minded. And yay for conservative Christians having less political influence here than anywhere else in the United States! We need some place in the US where that holds true and I'm proud to be living in one of those states. ^^
And I also loved the fact that our English accent is very neutral. I always thought so myself but it's nice to know it's validated. But I never really thought we had a similar accent to those from the prairies or apparently the Northern Midlands as well... Although, where are the Northern Midlands? California is a bit of a given since of proximity issues but the others are new to me. You learn something new every day, even when it's about yourself.
