Oh the Olympics

After my last post, I went to sleep for like ten hours and woke up just in time to watch the NBC broadcast of the Opening Ceremony. I've got to say, it being broadcast in English was rather nice and made the scope of all the performances so much cooler. Not as boring as the first time around but then again, it wasn't a marathon of the whole ceremony all at once either. There were commercials and while they did cut at sometimes annoying times and for some odd reason, cut some of the ceremony out, they did make it seem less bogged down.
I am a bit annoyed that they cut some of the ceremony out and not just resume where they left off. It wasn't live and they had a good 15 hours to go and deal with the footage so we didn't have to deal with not seeing all of the ceremony. :\ But that does make me infinitely glad that I was able to catch the entire thing in its entirety live.
Like I said, having English descriptions and explanations for some of the performances helped a lot. Like how those ancient drums were only discovered three years ago or how the symbolism between the different philosophical ideals were worked in, the contrasting light and dark, tall and small... It just brought in the richness of the Chinese culture so much more. The moments that I loved when I first saw the opening ceremony, I still liked -- the fireworks made into footsteps, and the run in air to light the cauldron with the Olympic torch but I added onto that with a new favorite and that's that little boy Lin Hao who survived the Sichuan earthquakes and ended up saving two of his own classmates was so wonderful and it made me tear up for him. What an awesome and apt reward for such selflessness.
Right now, I've been watching the live girls soccer match between Japan and the US live online. Yay for the US as they've just won 1-0. ^^ I've got to admit, by halftime, I was also rooting a bit for Japan because it seemed like it was a bit futile for Japan... The US were protecting their one goal like crazy and all attempts by the Japanese team seemed to go long or wide. To be fair, the US also made some crappy shots themselves as well that it almost seems surprising that they got that one goal.
Okay, what to watch now? It's almost 4 AM and not that that match is over, I need something new... Oh, there's Badminton live! I've always had a thing for that fast paced game so I think I'll head there. It's either that or to watch women's judo or women's basketball, something I'm not very into at all. It's Women's singles and it's between a Sri Lankan and a Vietnamese girl. I don't know who I'll root for but the Vietanmese girl is leading and seems like she'll be winning this round? set? as well.
