I finally made myself watch Stargate: Universe.
Going into it, I was mixed. I hadn't heard great things about it but then again, when the news of of a new Stargate show came around, it came on the heels of the cancellation of Stargate: Atlantis, a show I did somewhat enjoy.
When SGA came around, I was still very much into Stargate: SG-1 so I really didn't pay SGA any mind until SG-1 got cancelled. I can't say I've enjoyed SGA as much as SG-1 since to me, there are these iconic and epic SG-1 episodes that just hit every single one of my buttons and SGA just never quite got there. Sure, episodes have gotten close (Tao of Rodney, Duet, The Brotherhood, to name a few) but I've never experience quite the same high level of glee... I mean, SGA, for me, was a replacement for SG-1. And it helped that the fanfics were awesome and had a much different tint to them than the SG-1 Jack/Daniel fics I used to read.
And now there's SGU. Before watching it, I was scared that it would suck and it won't be a worthy replacement for SGA. I was also afraid that it won't suck and I'll end up loving it. Now after watching it, I can say, well... It was kinda boring.
Maybe it's because I don't have a good feel for the characters yet. Although, I see myself leaning towards Eli (the Rodney who isn't totally abrasive but also not as brilliant) but that's about it. Everyone else, meh. Even Camille, the woman touted as being the first openly gay character. Whatever. Personally, I've just liked Ming Na in the past and that'll probably sway her more in my favor than her sexuality.
It's the first episode so hopefully the second will be better. But I'm not feeling all too optimistic about it... It just doesn't feel like Stargate. It had Sam and Jack and bits of Daniel in that video (probably my personal highlight of the show, which is a bit sad but I've always been a Danny fangirl so...) but it just wasn't the same as it was in the Rising where we had the nice banter between Jack and Daniel to make me feel like they're part of the same universe. Right now, it's feeling a bit divorced from the old series and that's probably what they all wanted -- a reinvention of the franchise, blah, blah, blah. But for a fan like me who was into this from the very beginning with the movies and made the jump to the both of the TV series (even if my start in SGA was a bit forced), I'm feeling a bit neglected. Part of the reason why I never warmed up to SGA as much as SG1 was the lack of levity -- it got dark pretty early and pretty quickly. The quirky humor just wasn't as strong and that's probably one of my favorite elements to the Stargate universe.
If the creators and the writers are trying to draw back their audience (and gain new ones -- don't get me started on their whole quest for a different demographic for their viewership), I certainly hope going back to the basics and bringing back some of the things fans loved most about the show. Ultimately, it's what drew us to the show in the first place and I for one, missed it in SGA and would love to see it come back. It is hard to tell with a pilot if something is going to succeed so I'll give it a few more episodes before I decided but right now, I really wish Rush wasn't seemingly insane and Scott wasn't having some weird fraternizing thing with that girl named James. If it does succeed, who do we slash?
Somehow, I have a very odd feeling it'll end up being Young/Rush... *winces*
