It's weird, but I feel like I'm stalking Matthew Rhys. He plays Kevin, the character I'm absolutely obsessed with on Brothers & Sisters and by extension, am also absolutely obsessed with him.

I'm doing my usual thing, reading his Wiki page, watching every single interview he's ever given on Youtube, reading the interviews he's had, that sort of thing. And little by little, it seems like you get to know who this person really is. Of course, in the back of your mind you wonder if it's not just all an act (especially since he is an actor and it wouldn't exactly be hard for him to do that) but at the same time, you feel like this guy is just so cool.

I kinda want to write him. A fan letter I mean.

God, I haven't written a fan letter in a long time... Not since Kimeru. And there was the language barrier thing there so it always felt like it was safer and that I had a cover. Not that it was necessary -- Kimeru is such a darling with his fans and he wrote me back that one time so he can do no wrong in my eyes... Somehow, I doubt Matthew could top that... *shrugs*

Anyway, I've been watching B&S a lot the last week or so. And I mean A LOT. I go back, revisit each episode and go through my favorite Kevin moments, sometimes over and over again (seriously, that first scene where Kevin interviews Scotty is practically memorized). Sometimes I jump around, like I have a burning need to see Kevin defend Scotty to his boss after he drunkenly kissed him during that one black tie event and then desperately need to see him and Robert at the yard sale verbally fighting each other (wow, I totally want to see those two scenes again). Other times, I'll just do it systematically -- pick a season and just go through episode by episode hitting every single Kevin scene in order.

Yeah, I'm obsessed.

But in doing so, you gain a great deal of appreciation for Matthew Rhys' acting ability. He's such a subtle actor and I find him so amazing in the ways he conveys himself physically. His gestures and mannerisms seems subconscious which make it so spot on and believable... They're small things -- blink and you'll miss them sort of things like the small quirk of a mouth, the quick movement of an eye, but if they weren't there, they would be surely missed. And I absolutely adore that about him.

That and his charming Welsh accent. I can't believe British people make fun of it! Hicks, indeed! Just hearing him speak Welsh is an eye-opening experience.

Yes, I watched him cook food in a trailer as he was being interviewed in Welsh. I didn't understand a damn thing but I still was all googly-eyed because of it. I'll admit it -- it made me swoon just a bit.

I had no idea he wasn't even American until I started looking into him. His accent seemed perfect! But after watching every single scene of his as many times as I have over the last several days, I've started to notice moments where he slips. Moments where I can tell he probably had trouble with a certain word or sentence because it was so obviously sound edited in later on. Or moments where his Welsh accent creeps in. One memorable moment was when Keven was ranting to Scotty in season 3 about why he was done with helping Tommy and why he didn't want to run off to Mexico to help his mother save Tommy from a cult. At one point he says the word "Holly" and you just know. I didn't pick up on it the first couple of times I saw that scene but at some point it became clear that it didn't sound right.

Still, it's moments like those that sort of endear him more to you. It certain does to me. God, it's been so long since I've fangirled this hard for someone...

The weird thing is that I don't generally go for guys like that. Curly hair generally is a turn off for me... I can't help but think of the guy who played Cory Matthews (one of the Savages but for the life of me, I can't remember his first name) and his bristle head... Kevin/Matthew has hair like that but I can't help but find it oddly charming. And cute.

Ah, well, I'm off. I've found yet another author of Kevin/Scotty fics who doesn't suck! Yay! That's two now! And this one is even better than the first! Now, if only I can find something that is longer than a oneshot and has a bit more emotional depth than pure fluff. That would make me so incredibly happy -- even if it isn't Kevin with Scotty.

Thank you for that lovely way of describing him. I completely agree with you. He's capable of completely giving every scene everything he's got (just like Luke Macfarlane, their scenes together are always great!) It's Matthew's subtlety that makes him such a good actor.

Have you seen him in "House of America"? I think it's the best he's ever made.

PS. someone mentioned this post on IMBD, that's how I ended up here, in case you're wondering. ;)

Actually, I was wondering who you were since I didn't recognize your name as having been on my flist.

And my god, someone mentioned this post on IMBD? I only wrote this yesterday! And it's not even that particularly noteworthy... *mind boggles* Hopefully whatever was said was complementary and didn't make me out to be completely crazy... I was in a rather frenzied fangirl moment and somehow that post was what became of it. ><

And alas, I haven't seen House of America. So far, my only exposure to Matthew has been B&S but I'm eager to try his other works...

Ah, don't worry, that person posts everything that merely mentions Matthew. I wasn't actually going to read it, because 98% of the posts are uninteresting, but then I saw it was LJ, so I got curious. :)

As far as Matthew's work is concerned I can recommend his other works. Matthew is usually good, even if the movie sucks.

Well, not going to bother you any further. Have a nice day :)
