Boston Legal, season 3, episode 18, Son of the Defender is quite possibly the best episode of Boston Legal I've seen so far. I can't imagine any other episode topping it. Even Death Be Not Proud, that amazing finale to the first season might not beat it. Why? Because this episode shows you just how good of an actor William Shatner really is. You forget that, especially in the last two decades...

The music was good, both storylines were good, and you got to see Denny Crane be more than that yucky old man. And it used old footage from a show Shatner used to do back when TV was black and white! I was so shocked when I first saw it... Was that really a young William Shatner? Why, yes, it was! Damn, he was cute back then...

Not only that, but Paul (played by the always awesome Rene Auberjonois) had an actual substantial part! The part where they were all deliberating was amazing. Even Miss Some-Southern-State-That-I've-Already-Forgotten offered up some relevant insight! Even though Alan was not up front and center, it was an amazing episode.

Hmm...Okay, maybe Death Be Not Proud is up there with Son of the Defender but for different reason. Best Alan episode and best Denny episode. Overall, which is best? God, I don't know. Maybe I should reserve it for the future Supreme Court death penalty episode... I have no idea when it's coming aside from sometime in season four but hopefully it comes soon... I can't wait! Hopefully it's a good Alan episode since it's been a while since I've felt like I've seen one. At least one that isn't somewhat formulaic. As it is, after this season, things change... And after that, things get sad and serious in season five with Denny, whom somehow I've managed to come to care for despite his being rather yucky. I can't say I want to see him deteriorate... But it's a short season and hopefully it'll all end with somewhat of a happy ending...Rather than The Practice where everyone was split up...
