So, it's been about four weeks since I ended up hurting my foot... The bruising is all gone and the swelling has mostly subsided. It doesn't hurt to walk on that foot, though the toe that was most affected still hurts when you touch it firmly. And the most problematic thing about it? I still can't bend it.

At first, it was just so swollen and sore that I just left it be. But now that that has mostly gone away, I've been trying to bend it but I can never get very far. It's not a bend at all, though it moves... And when I try to bend it with my fingers, it hurts like hell. What it feels like is that it's very stiff, probably still sore but I only notice it when I try to bend the toe. *sigh*

I should probably be giving it a few more weeks to fully recover... I don't know if I broke it or not, though I think chances are that it's more than possible that I did and from what I hear, these things just take time to heal. But I am worried about my toe. I don't want a toe I can never bend again... That's pretty scary. I'm trying to stay hopeful though, since really, what can I do outside of seeing an actual doctor? I'm not even sure one is needed yet but if I'm still unable to bend it a few weeks from now, I'm guessing that's when I really need to see a professional...

From the sounds of things, it's worth getting an X-ray now as the more it heals, the harder it will be to fix if it needs to be rebroken and reset. Toes can heal by themselves without any problems, but not if there is a problem with the alignment, which can lead to deformity and limited movement. Sorry! Good luck!

:(

I keep wondering if I truly broke it because wouldn't I have known if it was broken? Wouldn't it have hurt more? I've never had anything like this happen to me before so I have no frame of reference...

Toes are weird because sometimes when you break them, they hurt like the buggery, while other times they are mostly fine and it's just the fact they keep aching for a lot longer than you would expect that makes you realise there's been a break (I have had several breaks confirmed only with X-rays for subsequent breaks: my bones aren't manky! rather, ballet, cycling, stamping horses and the occasional barefooted sprint into an immovable object have led me to have a silly number of broken toes. Let us not talk about broken noses, it's embarrassing.)

The other option, too, is that it could be a soft tissue injury, maybe a tendon, as they are slow to heal and have a particular sort of pain to them, plus will really restrict movement in some cases.

If going for X-rays is going to impose a cost you'd rather not face at the moment and there is no severe pain and your toe has good blood flow and there's no numbness in your foot, it's unlikely to get any worse. Worst case is that you might end up with a toe that doesn't bend well. Having said that, are you a famous toe artist? Do you need it to bend well? I have a few digits at slightly modified angles after sundry accidents and they all work fine ;-)

I just don't do very well with doctors... Just the thought of them is making me very uncomfortable and anxious. I generally like to wait until I'm on the verge of death before venturing out and seeking one for help. :\

The thing is, that first day, it hurt, but it was very manageable. Frankly, he menstrual cramp I was having that day bothered me more. And when I injured it, it didn't hurt as much as it did later on when I started to bruise. In fact, other than the rather spectacular bruise, it didn't seems that bad... So I keep going back and forth on whether or not I actually broke it.

The toe itself looks normal, straight, maybe a bit thicker than it used to be and it generally doesn't hurt. This sorta happened before with a different toe when I was younger as I have a tendency to run into walls. That toe wasn't hurt as badly but it never did look the same afterwards but I could always bend it just fine... I'm just hoping you're right in that it might be okay...

If it's straight, and straight in every plane (sometimes things deform in an unexpected direction), then even if it is broken, it's usually fine in the end :-) (Subject to possible ongoing lack of bending)
