Apparently white people drink Yakult.

My mind is blown.

I say this not in an ignorant, racist way, just that I'm surprised that non-Asian people even know of this drink since to me, it's very Chinese.

I mean, now that I'm older, I realize it's not just Chinese people who drink it since it's rather popular in many Asian countries. Somehow, it just never occurred to me that people would drink it if they weren't like me and had grown up drinking it.

Basically, Yakult is a probiotic drink that has live cultures, sort of like a yogurt drink? A milk yogurt drink? I may be a bit off since I don't eat yogurt and can't for the life of me remember what yogurt tastes like. Translated literally from Chinese, we call it "Sour Milk" which probably makes it sound unappetizing but it's really quite yummy. It's slightly sour/acidic, but it's also creamy and milky and surprisingly sweet. I think it's delicious and have been drinking it since I was a small child. I even have memories of going to Hong Kong and having my relatives buy me those little plastic bottles of it. We even tried to sneak it back into America but they were confiscated at Customs. :(

Anyway, the first time I realized that it might be more widely popular than I thought it was, was during an episode of Suburgatory where Dallas said she named her new dog after her favorite probiotic drink. It was like, "Wait, did she say what I think she said???" And then, as I was rewatching the latest episode of Private Practice, I noticed Sheldon was drinking it on the episode! Mind blown, x2! He was even shaking it like you should before you drink it.

Is it a thing? A new thing? A fad? Have I just been living in a bubble that I haven't notice people actually buying into the Yakult cult? I'm kinda happy about it getting more widespread love but I gotta admit, it's really weird. It's not exactly a taste I ever thought some people would be amiable towards...

Like normal grocery stores? I certainly haven't seen it anywhere (but I live in the middle of nowhere where there's no much diversity) so I haven't seen it out of Asian shops.
