I don't what it is about this performance that I love so damn much. There's just so much good out of it. I mean, I've already covered some of my favorite parts -- Darren sounding good, Blaine's clothing ensemble, that sort of thing. I still am obsessed with that damned hat. It's just so wonderful on his head, it's like perched perfectly. I love the way it looks on his head, I love the color, I love the black band on it... I just really love that freaking hat. And I'm not generally a hat person, on girls or guys but that hat... I kinda want to see Blaine in a hat all the time now.
Plus, Darren did like a hundred things that I loved in this performance... From the very moment Sugar introduced him (who else loved the fact that she said "as cute and compact as ever"? I had such a great laugh over the "compact" description -- have people been talking to Darren because that's basically what he would say about himself), I was in love. Sure, part of it is the fact that I love Blaine. I've made no secret of the fact that I am a Blaine fan. In fact, there are a lot of times where I think I like Blaine more than I like Darren. Darren as a person, I'm not so sure of. There's something about him that makes me think that as genuine as he kinda comes off, I still think it's all manufactured. It's probably because of the nature of show business and how true personalities are rarely shown to the general public and a good dose of common sense pragmatism that makes me wonder in the back of my mind about Darren Criss. Blaine Anderson however, we kinda know. I say kinda because he's been more or less revamped since season two and I'm still not sure who Blaine ultimately is as a person. But what I do know, I like.
Anyway, back to what I was talking about before. I mean, his original revealing turn was a bit weak admittedly but I love the fact that he had a heart shaped eye patch (so corny, seems to play into the whole idea that Blaine throws himself wholeheartedly into his performances and I'll admit, it's fitting for such a corny song anyway) and how he yanked it off. I loved that he basically brought everyone watching back to Glee live with his "This song is dedicated to all the lovers in the room" since he would always preface his Silly Love Songs performance with "This song is for all the lovers in the house."
And it's all the little things that I loved about Darren's performance in this. I wonder how much of it was choreographed? He skipped to the stage! He skipped! So adorable! Even his faces during his singing was perfect. Generally, they just make me a bit embarrassed because of how exaggerated they are but this time they weren't as bad. Or maybe they just worked better with how silly this song is originally.
It's the stuff that I notice upon multiple viewings of the performances (and there have been many since Tuesday). He points to the far side of the room when he says "side of the road," he puts up one finger and then five when he says "fifteen miles"... I love how he even dances with the guitar (bass?) player and how he glances over to Kurt when the girls say "looking for the love getaway" and when he himself says "and we're heading on down to the love shack" right at the moment he says "love." Even the "jukebox money" part where he mimes taking out some money from his jacket's inside pocket (where have I seen him do that before because it feels insanely familiar).
I adore his silly bendy dance over to cute (more adorableness) and how he basically dances in front of and then draws Kurt into the song. You already know how much I love how he danced with Kurt (his eyes were stuck on Kurt as he rounded around him!) and how he just beams while he's next to Kurt while he's singing. It's one of the rare moments where Darren totally sells me on the love Blaine feels for Kurt.
I'm not so fond of how he goes off into the audience and draws the sorority sisters into a conga line (how hetero but I'll attribute it to Blaine's innate ability/need to engage his audience when he's performing). And of course, the fist on the table moment -- I'll be honest, it reminds me of last season's performance of Misery where the Warblers banged the tables (that was also a favorite part of that song of mine). Of course, along that same line, I love how everyone stomped their feet at the same time. They really seem like they're having the blast of their lives... Can we really believe this level of fun and happiness could be achieved at a dry party since presumably, everyone invited are high school students?
I'm really glad Blaine ended up back to Kurt at the end and they were essentially dancing and singing to each other but did Britney really have to dance in between them? And for the longest time I was trying to figure out if Blaine had his arm around Kurt's waste at the very end where Blaine was swatting one of the balloons away but alas, I've decided that was arm that had the hand that held the mic and it was only tucked in and not around Kurt where it would be been wonderful if it had been placed there. I'm also disappointed at the little dedication to Whitney at the end that they basically shoehorned in. :\ Not that she doesn't deserve it but it felt like an afterthought and worse, it felt like they cut out a bit of video to go to it. Sure, it would have been like another second or two, but I would have liked those few seconds of more Blaine and Kurt since the focus had been on them when they went to it.
Man, I only meant to watch it another time before going over some late night FV playing but I ended up watching it like ten more times... It's just so good and thank you Glee Costume Department for dressing Blaine so fine... I'm so much more attracted to Blaine than I ever had been for Darren, it's seriously weird. I mean, they're the same person! I much prefer Blaine for some reason...
