Me: 3
It was close but ultimately, I think the carrots won.
So I decided to pull some of my carrots today. I've been pulling about one a week for the last couple of weeks and they seemed finally large enough for what I would call "baby carrot" sized. The last couple of carrots were easy to pull. I actually never had trouble until now. Apparently, as carrots grow bigger, they become a huge ass to pull. I didn't realize that and spent a fair amount of time trying to pull them out. Correction, I spent a fair amount of time trying to dig them out after I pulled off the green tops. OTL
I don't know if you've ever grown carrots before, but the seeds are tiny! Smaller than a grain of rice. But these things need space to grow or they wouldn't have room to grow very large. So dilemma. Do you just sprinkle the seeds around and thin them out later or do you actually individually pick them out one by one and space them evenly as you plant them?
That last one seemed like a bitch, and I'm lazy as all hell, so I went with the first option, especially since I knew I didn't want to grow them full sized anyway. Since then I found out that you could mix them with radish seeds and since they mature faster, you can pull them first and their empty space would give you enough room for the carrots to grow. Next year, that's exactly what I'm doing, even if I don't really eat radishes outside of tacos...
Anyway, from the picture, there's actually another carrot hidden in the back so there are actually five carrots in that bunch. You can kinda see the end of it, that wispy tendril in between the two on the right. The one up front that I'm holding with my fingers? One of the ones I had to dig out so that's why I'm clutching it. The other one is the hidden one in the back -- I managed to hide one but not the other.
And two of the carrots are still outside in the pot. Yeah, that's why I said the carrots won. They made me give up. I was getting too dirty and I felt like I was destroying the other carrots surrounding the broken ones... And it was getting really hot (we're almost around 90 today), and sunny and the wind was blowing my hair into the dirt... I got fed up so I gave up on the last two. I realize I probably have to go back out there to dig them out though. I pulled their tops off so I'm not sure they can grow any more like that without their green things to get sunlight. Do they grow back? I don't know. And plus, they're still there so if they don't keep on growing, they'll just end up taking up space from the other carrots and rotting in the soil, which isn't a good prospect.
Ah, damn it. Now I'm worried about them all. I think I'm going to head back outside. And I just got clean too... :\
Oh well, at least that means my afternoon snack of fresh carrots and Sabra hummus will be a bit more filling... I thought about peeling the carrots but being as small as they are, it's not that easy to peel so I decided to just leave the skin on. It's edible so I might as well even though I've always peeled my carrots before eating them before this...
Okay, I'm going back outside to grab my remaining two carrots. I hope I can find them...
