True Pronunciation
Dec. 11th, 2004 02:29 amSo today I went to the AI Appreciation Dinner thing and Xiao was there and she had brought AJ...
Somehow we got on the topic of something and the name "Oregon" came up. AJ actually was the first to say it. But the problem was he pronounced it "Ore-GONE" (like Gone in the Wind) when it's really "Ore-gen" (gen like Genichiro or genki -- I tried to think of English words but I couldn't...).
I started saying that it was "Ore-gen" and he said it was "Ore-GONE" and we just had a little conversation about the correct pronunciation of Oregon. He said he would ask his friend who is from Oregon if they called the state "Ore-gen" like I said it was or like "Ore-GONE" as he thought it was.
And then he asked me where I was from.
Guess where I'm from?
I hail from the Beaver State, which, you probably guessed, is OREGON!!! And it's pronounced "Ore-gen" for your information. I am so annoyed at everyone calling Oregon, Ore-GONE. It's so stupid! Oregon is Oregon, not Oregone. Does it look like Oregone? If it was Oregone, it would have an "e" at the end.
And you know what I hate the most? It's when people argue that it is Oregone when I tell them it's "Ore-gen." Just because they've said it that way their entire life does not make it right. You'd think I would know seeing as I was born and raised in that state and have spent 18 years living there... Oregonians call Oregon, Oregon. Not Oregone. I mean, then we'd be like "Ore-gone-ians."
AJ did admit he was wrong after I said I was from Oregon.... Well, actually, he just sorta conceded, saying he lost that argument.
It's just so weird though... Like everyone I've met here says Oregon wrong... They actually learn it in school as "Ore-GONE"... Weird...
When I was a kid, I remember watching Lamb Chop and they mentioned Ore-GONE (the first time I heard it said that way) and I was like, what's that? Did they just mispronounce Oregon?
*yawns* I'm getting sleepy... I got through six episodes of the Legendary Four Aces... It's actually pretty good once it gets going and you don't question why things are happening anymore... I think the moment I really started paying attention was when the Bak Fu's uncle figured out that Bak Fu was his nephew... The whole training thing with Bak Fu's uncle is weird in that it doesn't make sense in the long run but it works and I like it... *shrugs* Now all I want is more of it...
I'm downloading the next batch but I'm at 143h 40min left, d/l at 5 KiB/sec and uploding at like 15 KiB/sec... :(
I was supposed to get my DVD today... Fly Me to Polaris, remember? I got all excited and I got the package. I quickly opened it and broke the seal on the DVD, fully intending on watching it. Then I looked down.
It was the wrong DVD.
It was the wrong DVD and I just opened it.
I emailed the person and he said it would take it back and send me my DVD. God, I was so looking forward to watching it! It's a HK movie that's about love and has lots of angst.... I heard it was a tear-jerker and I really wanted something beautifully sad...
The guy's so nice! He told me to send it back and he'll take it back unopened. And he'll refund the money I paid for it even though I opened it. I'm just amazed. Most people aren't so nice... And this was after I had told him that he didn't need to refund the money since I did break open the seal... He insisted on it! Kya! So nice!
But then again, the thing only cost me $7 with shipping and the cost of sending it back will be like $4 so technically, I only gain $3 back...
Okay, time for another episode of LFA (don't wanna keep typing it out) and then sleep.
