Anime fanfic writers

sherryillkAnime fan fiction writers are starting to get to me... I want to go back to HL! You don't see the same idiocy as you do in anime fandoms and I really miss a higher quality of writing...
I mean it's not like all are like that -- I've found some really nice gems in the last few years but the majority don't even begin to compare in terms of plot, character development, hell, just quality in writing with good conventions. And people seem to love sticking random Japanese everywhere! It really is annoying, you know? It totally disrupts the flow and I still remember when I was just starting out in anime fan fiction (it was really fan fiction that drew me into anime, not the other way around) and how I didn't know what some of these more basic words were. Simple things like "konbanwa" and "oneesan" threw me off, much less words like "zutto" or "eien."
As a writer, shouldn't you be aware of the fact that you might have readers like that reading your fanfics? Have some concern for the newbie reader! Think about the fact that you're writing in ENGLISH! Is that so much to ask? If you stick in random sentences in Japanese, seriously, what is the point of that aside from confusing your reader to hell? For me, that's a cue to leave because obviously the writer hasn't put enough thought about the reader so how can you expect them to put enough thought into the story?
And when you try to point it out in a very nice, polite concrit review that what they've done has just ruined the pace that they've set up, they go and bit your head off, insulting you while they're at it... T_T It does ruin the pace though! I don't understand being a writer and spending time building up to this grand moment, only to put a Japanese word there, having to go down to the very bottom of the story, read the translation and then go all the way back up to the moment. The moment's ruined! Completely and totally squashed! They respond by saying "Nihongo" is more realistic.
Right.
I don't understand the minds of anime fanfic writers at all. I think I would have been happier if I started off in anime fanfics... All my old fandoms are coloring my anime ones and I know they're not the same but I've always thought good writing was the same in any fandom.
*sigh* I'm going to read some Tessa and Diana's Misconceptions. That would get least make me happier and I'll won't feel this despair at the gigantic mass of bad fics out there...

on 2006-02-28 08:37 pm (UTC)...I'm not one of those people am I? Not that you've ever criticized me or anything.
I've read other books (real books, not fanfiction) that incorporate the usage of other languages. Maybe I'm used to not understanding a lot, but I find it makes it more colorful. Of course, those same authors always write the translation right afterwards.
For example: "She's a puta who doesn't know anything. A whore."
Fairly self explanatory, that translation. It helps that I can read Spanish so the Italian didn't throw me off that much, but there have been other books where the authors didn't even bother with a translation. Orson Scott Card comes to mind...
Thing is, fanfic writers should try to emulate good authors instead of bad ones. Oh well.

on 2006-02-28 10:08 pm (UTC)And also, if the usages is not damaging to the story and the story is otherwise okay, then I usually am more forgiving towards the usage of foreign words... I mean it's a pet peeve, but really the story itself is the most important part but if there's nothing for me to latch onto, then I become harsher in by criticism.
